Denver Firefighters Monument

Fairmount Cemetery in Denver, Colorado was founded in 1890 and is Denver's second oldest operating cemetery after Riverside Cemetery. According to the book “The Denver Fire Department, A 125 Year Tradition,” a plot of land was purchased and reserved for Denver Firefighters at Fairmount Cemetery. Denver citizens erected a monument to the fallen Denver Firefighters buried at the plot in 1913. Several other fallen firefighters are also buried at the site. It is speculated that Denver Firefighters purchased the plot to bury those firefighters who had no family. The inscription on the monument reads, “In Memory of the Firemen that Died in the Performance of Their Duty, 1913.” I owe a huge debt of gratitude to long-time Newark, NJ Fire Buff Gary Knoller for showing me this piece of DFD history on July 17th, 2011.
