Barn Fire - 10/19/12 - Durango, CO

On October 19th, 2012 at 06:39 hours, firefighters from the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District were notified of a barn fire on Derby Drive, north of Rain Drop Drive, in the Sundance Hills Subdivision in Durango, CO. The fire protection responsibilities for this subdivision are shared by the Upper Pine Fire District (UPFD), the Los Pinos Fire District (LPFD), and the Durango Fire Rescue Authority (DFRA). The fire occurred in a Pole Barn that had been loaded with hay approximately two weeks before this incident. First arriving units were faced with a well developed fire involving the entire contents of the barn.

Automatic aid apparatus from the LPFD and DFRA arrived to assist in the fire suppression and water supply operations for the incident. Water tenders from all three agencies were tied into the first arriving UPFD Engine Company to provide the needed fire flow. A defensive fire attack was initiated and the bulk of the fire was knocked down shortly after arrival.

Additional attack lines were stretched and utilized to extinguish the remaining pockets of fire and overhaul the remains of the barn and its contents. Mutual aid units were starting to be demobilized after operating approximately 45 minutes on scene. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the UPFD.
