Structure Fire - 12/30/07 - Cedar Hill, NM

Just before 0900 on December 30th, 2007 San Juan County Fire District #3 (Cedar Hill) was dispatched to #6 County Road 2853 for a report of a structure fire. Additional information from dispatch indicated that the roof of the home was on fire and that all of the occupants had evacuated the building. First arriving units encountered a working attic fire in a two-story single family dwelling.

Building construction hampered some of the fire suppression efforts. Once interior crews had accessed the attic and were able to push some of the metal roofing away from the structure, it was discovered that the metal roof had been installed directly over an old wood shake roof. When the firefighters were able to expose the old roof, the fire was brought under control.

Mutual aid for staffing and water supply was provided by San Juan County Fire Districts #7 (Center Point); #2 (Flora Vista); #8 (Hart Valley); #4 (LaPlata); and the Aztec Fire Department. The Red Cross was requested to respond to assist the displaced occupants. The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation by the San Juan County Fire Marshal.
