Structure Fire - 08/24/11 - Durango, CO

On the morning of August 24th, 2011 around 0229 hours, the Durango/LaPlata County Combined Communications Center began receiving 9-1-1 calls reporting a structure on fire at 185 Silverview Lane. Located off the 29000 block of US Highway 160 in the Grandview area, this non-hydrant neighborhood requires an automatic aid response to bring in additional water tenders in the event of a reported fire. Dispatch was receiving reports of a confirmed fire and Upper Pine and Los Pinos Fire District apparatus were dispatched along with Durango Fire & Rescue Authority (DFRA) units.

DFRA firefighters, under the command of Battalion Chief Rod Allen, pulled in to the location and found a double-wide modular home well involved in fire. As first arriving Engine Company 1 went to work extinguishing the blaze, Engine Company 7 began to feed water to a large-diameter supply line that had been dropped in an area that would accommodate the water tender traffic. Engine 7 firefighters set up port-a-tanks for the water shuttle operation. Quick work by the fire suppression crews had the bulk of the fire knocked down shortly after arrival.

The home was occupied at the time of the incident, and all of the residents were able to escape without injury. As firefighters started overhauling the scene, crews were rotated out for rehab. Mop-up and salvage operations continued well into the early morning hours. The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation by the DFRA Fire Marshal’s Office.
