Buffin' the Big City...

Back in 1976, I had joined the Millburn, NJ Fire Department as a volunteer and had also become an auxiliary firefighter with the Newark, NJ Fire Department during the same time period. During my time in Newark, I had been riding with Engine 6 out of the firehouse they shared with Deputy 1 at Springfield Avenue and Hunterdon Street. Another former Millburn firefighter, Bill Heilman, had made the move to Newark years before and had offered (after my begging) to mentor me in the ways of “big city” firefighting. During the years that I “buffed” the Renaissance City, I developed a very deep affection for the Newark Fire Department and its members that remains with me to this day.

Thanks to some “new” technology, I have scanned most of my 35mm photographs of the Newark Fire Department. I’m now using “Photobucket” to present these images in a thumbnail gallery format. Unfortunately, the dates and locations of some of these incidents are unknown. Most of my “early” work (that means the distance, framing and lighting of most shots stink!) is displayed here. Other photos from more recent trips to Newark are contained in the “Photo Gallery” section of BuffaloHeadFire.Com.

The switch to digital photography has solved the problem of wondering what day a picture was taken. Thanks to Scott Wentworth, I also now remember to shoot the street signs when I’m photographing a fire incident (why didn’t I think of that!). Well, what follows is my Newark Fire Department collection. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed taking them!
