On Friday April 5th, 2013 at 14:42 hours firefighters from the Durango Fire Rescue Authority (DFRA) were dispatched to a report of a structure fire on Highway 172 in the area of Airport Hill. DFRA units arrived at 4404 Highway 172 to find a well involved single family dwelling fire. DFRA Engine 1 dropped a 5 inch supply line at the highway and proceeded down a long driveway to the burning building. A water shuttle was established utilizing drop tanks and tenders from the three responding agencies. As DFRA Battalion Chief Rod Allen arrived and took command, DFRA Engine 1 Captain Randy Baker was assigned to operations.

The building was a single wide mobile home, with a wood frame structure attached at the "C" side of the house. At the time of the fire, the wind was blowing out of the west at 15 miles per hour, gusting to 26. Two 1.75 inch attack lines were utilized in a defensive fire attack to bring the fire under control. The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation by the DFRA Fire Marshal's office and the LaPlata County Sheriff's Detectives.
